IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT Iran-France-Luxembourg-USA, 2025, 103 min, color

Despite bans and censorship, Iranian director Jafar Panahi returns to the big screen with this powerful and moving story.

A driver returning to his native village with his wife and child accidentally runs over a dog. They stop at a roadside junkyard to seek help, but fate has a surprise in store for them. The mechanic at the repair shop hears a sound from a wooden prosthesis that seems familiar to him. For him, it brings back memories of the years when he was a political prisoner and a man with the same prosthesis tortured him. The chance encounter turns into dangerous suspicion.

What begins as a classic story of revenge turns into a moral, social, and psychological dilemma: who has the right to judge? Who needs justice, and what does it mean – blood, silence, or forgiveness? Amid the tension, anger, and mistrust, nothing is certain except the pain these people carry.
