The film is set in the spring of 1945 on the remote North Sea island of Amrum. Amidst the island’s harsh yet breathtaking landscape, twelve-year-old Nanning strives to support his mother and family, hunting seals, fishing at night, and working on the farm. Life on the island carries a fragile sense of routine and an almost idyllic isolation, yet the approaching end of the war brings new uncertainties and challenges.
As Nanning confronts the realities of a world in upheaval, he faces the complex legacies of ideology, loss, and survival. His journey reflects the struggles of growing up under extraordinary circumstances and learning to understand both his family and himself. The film, inspired by the memories of screenwriter Hark Bohm, paints a vivid portrait of resilience, love, sacrifice, and the search for identity, capturing the tension between childhood innocence and the harsh demands of history.
