THE BEGGAR'S OPERA Czechoslovakia, 1991, 94 min, color

The film is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Václav Havel , which was staged by director Jiří Menzel in 1990 on the stage of the Drama Club. The well-known theme of totalitarian mechanisms was already developed in 1728 by John Gay and two hundred years later by Bertolt Brecht . The story is set in the 1920s, but it could of course take place at any time. The play has a precise dramatic arc and long, dense monologues.

The combination of Havel's brilliant text with Menzel's filmmaking art has created a work that will entertain the viewer with playfulness and enchant with its atmosphere.
