LEONORA ADDIO Italy, 2022, 90′, color, black and white, feature

“Leonora Addio” narrates the stunning adventures of Pirandello’s ashes and the tortuous journey of his urn from Rome to Agrigento, leading up to his eventful burial that took place only fifteen years after his actual death. And beyond that, to Pirandello’s last story, written twenty days before his death, “The Nail”, in which the young Bastianeddu, torn from his mother’s arms in Sicily and forced to follow his father across the ocean, is incapable of healing the wound that drives him to an irrational gesture.

Paolo Taviani

Paolo Taviani

Paolo Taviani – an Italian film director, came to cinema when quite young, alongside his older brother Vittorio Taviani (1929–2018). After working with Valentino Orsini especially as documentary filmmakers, screenplay writers, and feature film directors, they struck out on their own, directing, also together, “The Subversives” (1967). Consistent interpreters of a civically engaged cinema, in the second phase of their career, while continuing to represent the need and longing for utopia, they dedicated themselves to evoking the past and to adapting literary works to film. With “Leonora addio” (2022), Paolo, at 86 years of age, filmed for the first time completely on his own, and used the medium of cinema for his highly personal farewell to Vittorio and to the moviemaking they did together.
