Every January in a small town in Macedonia, the high priest throws a cross into the local waters, while hundreds of men charge for it. The one who finds the cross is believed to gain overall good fortune and prosperity. An unemployed single young woman Petrunija jumps into the water and catches the cross. In this conservative setting, her competitors feel they have every right to be furious: a woman dared to compete and achieve what they failed to achieve. Petrunija insists that she is the winner and refuses to return the cross.

Teona Mitevska

Born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1974, she currently lives there and in Brussels. Her first brush with film was as a child actor. She has a degree in graphic design and studied film at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. Her short film “Veta“ screened in Panorama of Berlin film festival. Her feature film “Jas sum od Titov Veles“, which screened at over 80 festivals worldwide and won over 20 awards, as well as “The Woman Who Brushed Off Her Tears“ and “When the Day Had no Name“ have all screened at the Berlinale. She runs the Sisters and Brother Mitevski production company with her siblings Vuk and Labina.
